OUR CLIENT
Affinity Learning Partnership is a mixed multi-academy trust operating across Staffordshire and Derbyshire, comprising of three secondary schools and four primary schools.
One of their sites, The De Ferrers Academy in Burton upon Trent, is the largest school in Staffordshire, educating more than 2,450 students across three campuses. This project was carried out at the Trent Campus, which serves Years 9–11 and provides the learning environment for students preparing for their GCSE qualifications.
THE BRIEFING
The existing boiler plant had reached the end of its operational life and required a complete upgrade to improve reliability, efficiency and long-term performance.
The project required a completely new boiler plant, including high-efficiency boilers, new distribution pipework, a modern Building Management System (BMS), upgraded heating
pumps, and new electrical infrastructure to create a fully modernised plant room.
IN THE END
To minimise disruption to teaching and learning, our engineers completed the works during the school holidays.
The project began with the careful removal of the existing high-level redundant storage tank and hot water heater. Heating and water services were isolated, safely drained
down, and prepared for the replacement works. The existing Remeha gas-fired boilers, heating pumps and associated pipework were then disconnected and removed.
The gas installation was modified to accommodate a new Viessmann Vitodens 200-W four-boiler modular cascade system, complete with new flue and pipework. To maximise
heating performance, two new 184kW Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers were installed alongside new Grundfos heating pumps, fitted with flexible connectors and anti-vibration mounts to ensure efficient, reliable operation.
A new Trend IQ4 Building Management System (BMS) control panel was installed, together with new controls and BMS wiring, providing improved monitoring, control and energy management across the heating system.
The electrical installation was also comprehensively upgraded. Existing lighting, the distribution board, gas emergency systems, isolators and spurs were removed and replaced with new equipment, resulting in a fully modern plant room designed to support the new heating installation.
The De Ferrers Academy now benefits from a completely modern, energy-efficient heating system that provides reliable performance for years to come. By replacing ageing equipment with high-efficiency plant and intelligent controls, the school has improved system reliability, enhanced energy management and reduced the risk of unplanned downtime.
