Russ Clay Work Experience

Written by Laura Cullen

Recently we had the honour of an ex-military JARTS mechanical aircraft technician join us for some work experience in Project Management.

After many years in the military, primarily focussing on recovery of crashed (military & civilian) aircrafts, transportation the aircrafts via road, sea and air, Russ Clay was looking for a new role in the “real world”.

Russ was approaching the end of a 12-year contract with the RAF and looking to study Prince 2 and NEBOSH. He was looking for some experience first-hand with project management in the workplace in order to gain valuable knowledge for the next move in his career.

Albeit, not quite the excitement of the RAF, Russ did actually spend some time on a large project where he was shown a gas leak and the response to this by the site team. This project in particular is a £1million scheme incorporating a complete heating overhaul across a period of 12 months.

We asked Russ first-hand how he found his time at ford Mainwaring:

“I found the work experience with the Ford-Mainwaring team incredibly useful and a good eye opener into civilian work life, to which I’d recommend anyone who’s leaving the service to do.  Dan showed me from start to finish how a typical project would run, going in-depth on the financial aspect of the project. I was also shown around a small project by Tom, the Contracts Manager, who explained how to cost a job to make it commercially viable to the business”

Russ explained to us that the experience he has had at Ford Mainwaring has been invaluable, it has made him far less anxious about leaving the military after so many years of service and he is looking forward to his future.

We wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do next!
