James Bateman Middle School – part of The Creative Learning PartnershipTrust, is a high-performing institution based in Knypersley, committed to excellence and providing an engaging, supportive learning environment where every pupil is empowered to reach their full potential.
THE BRIEFING
The school required an upgrade of the heating system to a more sustainable solution, along with various plantroom refurbishment activities, including electrical works, pipework services, heat exchangers, thermal insulation and BMS controls.
IN THE END
Given the long-term nature of the project, careful planning ensured minimal disruption to school operations throughout the works. The original heating system relied on a single mains supply for the entire school, which limited efficiency.
• By dividing the system into separate zones, we significantly improved control and performance.
• Air source heat pumps were installed as the primary heat source, supported by two backup boilers to ensure consistent heating.
One of the challenges faced was the limited power capacity needed to support the upgraded system. In collaboration with National Grid, we facilitated a power supply upgrade, including the installation of a new switch room to meet the increased demand.
• The project also included a complete replacement of internal pipework, along with the installation of new radiators and valves.
• Additional upgrades featured fan convectors in selected classrooms, main hall, and sports hall, as well as over-door air curtains and radiant panel heaters in various areas.
• Ceiling grids were added into four classrooms that included LED lighting.
• All pipework was fully insulated, and comprehensive commissioning and testing were carried out to ensure full functionality and system efficiency before the project was completed.
