OUR CLIENT
Ford Mainwaring was engaged by John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust for full removal and installation of heating and pipework at their Chase Terrace Academy, based in Burntwood.
THE BRIEFING
The scope of work to be completed by Ford Mainwaring spanned several buildings across the campus:
Heating & Air Source Heat Pump Works:
- De-commission and strip whole site heating system including plant.
- Supply & installation of Daikin Screw Type 320kw air source heat pump including electrical distribution and sub-main works.
- Install new Remeha Quinta condensing boilers to complete hybrid system complete with 4000 litre buffer vessel.
- Grundfos heating pumps site wide across all zones and circuits
- New heating distribution pipework throughout site, splitting into multiple zones.
- Installation of new heating emitters including radiant panels and radiators.
- Installation of heat pump Air Conditioning systems within the theatre to enable comfort cooling and heating of the space to suit daily usage.
Swimming Pool Efficiency:
- Install new Air Handling Unit with full heat recovery including internal and external ductwork systems.
- Install new supply and extract ductwork to changing rooms with free heating on recovery air from pool area.
- Remove existing inefficient electric heating to pool area.
- Install a new free-standing column-mounted pool cover system, complete with remote control. The pool cover system includes a floatation boom, tow ropes and spool tapes.
- Install new temperature and humidity control linked to BMS system.
LED Lighting:
- Replace complete side wide lighting installation to new LED ceiling panels, battens and external fittings.
- Install new switchgear and ELV systems where required.
- Complete design and co-ordination carried out by FM team.
BMS Controls:
- In conjunction with our partner, Demma Group we undertook the replacement of the whole site BMS control system which included control over the Air Source Heating, Air Conditioning Systems, Hot Water, Underfloor Heating, Pumps and Heat Recovery Systems.
- The systems included new wiring, control panels, instrumentation, outstations and commissioning.
Included in all areas was also a complete test and quality assurance checks of all systems to ensure they will work properly in the future for as long as possible.
IN THE END
During the 12 months on-site, the project leaders and engineers from Ford Mainwaring were considerate of their surroundings and worked hard to not disrupt the running of the Academy.
Installing the Daikin air source heat pump provides energy-efficient heating which can result in significant cost savings on energy bills compared to traditional heating systems, as well as reduced carbon emissions. Air source heat pumps also require less maintenance than other heating systems, further reducing long-term costs for the Academy.

TESTIMONIAL
“Ford Mainwaring were fantastic from the very start of the project. Their ability to accommodate the normal operations of the School throughout was crucial in allowing the project to be delivered successfully and on time with minimal disruption. Flexible scheduling and regular meetings to discuss progress and next steps were always constructive and formed a vital part of the process – the School felt involved in the delivery of the project and as such, our understanding of the work involved, schedules of works and key milestones were always clear.
A positive relationship was formed from very early on between the School and Ford Mainwaring. All contractors were skilled and professional and became recognisable, friendly faces throughout the duration of the project. In particular, when obstacles were presented due to unknown factors relating to the site, or sudden changes in the School’s operations, contractors from Ford Mainwaring couldn’t have been more accommodating, ready to adjust programmes to overcome these obstacles without causing any long-term disruption.
The site foreman was a reliable and trusted figure throughout the project; his presence and in-depth knowledge of the works being undertaken as well as our own requirements gave the School a sense of security and provided a dependable point of contact that was always available.
This project represents the biggest modernisation of our oldest facilities (some dating back to the 1960s) in the lifetime of the School. Since the conclusion of works, we finally have functional heating and controls that are fit for purpose and future-proof in areas of the School that have not had fully operational heating for 20+ years. Comfort for staff and students has been improved significantly. The modern solutions such as ceiling mounted radiant panels, heat recovery and an air source heat pump have made an incredibly positive contribution to the School by ensuring that our complex estate remains fit-for-purpose, environmentally efficient and cost-effective to run.
So far, energy savings have been significant, a hugely important factor with the current energy crisis; we are having to pay more attention than ever to our energy expenditure. The controls that are now in place ensure that we are fully in control of our energy usage, and having efficient heat sources means that every unit of gas and electricity that contributes to the heating of the School is used effectively.”
– O Cooper, Network & Facilities Coordinator, Chase Terrace Academy.
