OUR CLIENT
Shaw Education Trust is a growing multi-academy trust. We have previously completed several projects for the trust at other schools, such as the pool plant room refurb project at Saxon Hill.
THE BRIEFING
During a supplier-side gas repair by Cadent at Fortis Academy, a gas leak on the client side was discovered. We were soon contacted to assess the work needed and provide gas repair works. Swiftly responding to the call, our experienced team arrived at Fortis Academy and took a look at the system. It was found that the existing cast iron gas mains were severely corroded, having been installed many years back when the school was built.
The existing main gas line had come to its end of life and needed a replacement. We were briefed to carry out the following:
- Design a new below ground gas system to suit the existing above ground installations and plant.
- Excavate the driveway to allow for the new pipework installation.
- Install new 250mm MDPE gas pipework in new trench.
- Protect, backfill and reinstate all trenching with non-hazardous waste removal from site.
- Supply and install prefabricated steel pipework sections above ground where required to connect to existing plantrooms.
- The final stage was to strength test, purge and commission the gas main.
All connections, including those to existing steel entries, had to be precise and seamless, adhering to the project’s technical specifications. As part of the final handover, we conducted extensive testing and purging of the new mains system to ensure functionality and safety.

IN THE END
The replacement of the gas mains pipeline was successfully completed on time and within budget. The installation was carried out over the summer holidays, avoiding disruption to staff and students. Shaw Education Trust was left with peace of mind that the school now has a safer, more reliable, and durable gas supply system.
