VIVO Defence Services is a leading infrastructure services and facilities management provider, delivering critical solutions to both public and private sector clients. At RAF Valley, a key training base for the Royal Air Force in Anglesey, North Wales, they required essential heating system upgrades to maintain efficiency and reliability in this vital operational environment.

THE BRIEFING

RAF Valley faced several challenges with its existing heating system, which was outdated, inefficient, and prone to potential failures. Key challenges included:

• Reduced heating efficiency due to system debris and corrosion, impacting operational comfort and system reliability.
• Aging boilers and pumps that were no longer performing optimally, leading to higher energy costs and increased maintenance requirements.
• Potential downtime risks during critical operational periods, necessitating a swift and well-coordinated installation process.

A comprehensive overhaul of the Heating Plant was needed to improve efficiency, reliability, and longevity. To achieve this, we carried out the following:

• Water System Treatment: Adding a non-toxic dispersant and flushing agent to remove debris and contaminants from the heating water system.
• Boiler upgrade: Replacing aging boilers, pumps, and pressurisation units with modern, high-efficiency alternatives.
• Flushing and Filtration: Ensuring a complete system flush, removing accumulated residue, and installing a magnetic filter to maintain water quality.
• Pipework and System Modifications: Adjusting existing pipework to accommodate new components while ensuring compatibility with the base’s operational needs.
• Final Commissioning: Ensuring all installations were thoroughly tested, with documentation and certification provided for compliance and future maintenance.

IN THE END

Once work was completed and commissioned, the site now has:

• A cleaner, more efficient heating system through a controlled flushing process and chemical treatment, preventing further corrosion and build-up.
• High-efficiency boilers, replacing the existing units with high-efficiency Remeha Quinta condensing boilers, reducing energy consumption and emissions.
• Improved system resilience with a new plate heat exchanger, magnetic filters, and modern pressurisation units, ensuring long-term reliability.
• Seamless integration and commissioning, with all modifications carefully planned to minimise disruption to RAF Valley’s operations.

The new heating system at RAF Valley now operates at peak efficiency, providing a dependable and cost-effective solution for years to come. The site now benefits from lower maintenance demands, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced system longevity—delivering a real difference to daily operations.
